You Were Made To Shine

Spirituality

I used to think shining for God meant being loud about my faith.

Like if I just posted enough Christian content, talked about Jesus enough, or did enough good things, then I’d be a bright light in the darkness.

But that’s not what Jesus meant when He said:

“You are the light for the whole world. A city built on top of a hill cannot be hidden, and no one lights a lamp and puts it under a clay pot. Instead, it is placed on a lampstand, where it can give light to everyone in the house. Make your light shine, so others will see the good you do and will praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

That sounds beautiful, but what does it actually mean?

Light Comes From God, Not Performance

I don’t know if you’ve ever been in one of those pitch-black rooms where you can’t see anything, not even your own hand in front of your face. It’s the kind of darkness that swallows everything. But if you turn on even the weakest flashlight, the light shines in the darkness, pushing it away.

That’s who Jesus is. He is Light itself. He’s the source of every good thing, every truth, every bit of warmth and clarity. Without Him, the world is pitch-black.

But here’s the crazy part: Jesus calls us that light too.

Not because we’re naturally radiant or perfect. Not because we have everything figured out. But because His Spirit is in us.

That means our job isn’t to create light. It’s to let it shine.

That’s freeing. Because a lot of us, especially if we grew up in religious spaces, have been told that shining means trying harder.

Be good.
Be bold.
Be noticeable.

But Jesus never said, Try to be the light. He said, You are the light.

That’s not just a command. That’s an identity.

Unique Stars For Jesus

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a star shone in the sky, leading wise men to Him.

You and I? We’re like that star.

We don’t shine to make people look at us. We shine to point people to Him.

And here’s something I need you to hear: Every star is unique.

You’re not supposed to shine like someone else.

Some people have wild stories: overnight miracles, radical callings, huge ministries. And sometimes, when you don’t have that kind of story, it’s easy to wonder: “Why am I not like that?” or “God, have You left me out?”

Here’s the thing: God doesn’t do copy and paste Christianity.

Your light is yours.

Maybe you shine through deep conversations, creativity, or kindness.
Maybe you shine through activism, compassion, or storytelling.
Maybe your light isn’t loud; it’s steady, quiet, and deep.

And that’s okay.

Jesus wants us to be with Him. To know Him. And when we do, He makes us shine in the way we were always meant to.

Whatever you are designed to do, do it with and for Jesus.

Identity Comes From God, Not Labels

For a long time, I thought my worth was tied to how good I was.

If I prayed enough, read the Bible enough, avoided the wrong things—then God would be proud of me.

But that mindset? It was exhausting.

And maybe you’ve felt that too. Maybe you’ve been told you had to perform to be worthy. To prove you belong.

The truth? You don’t have to prove anything. God does the proving.

You were made in the image of God. Your existence is already proof that you are wanted and loved.

And when Jesus calls you to shine, He isn’t asking you to become someone else. He’s calling you into who you really are.

That means:

  • You don’t have to be perfect.
  • You don’t have to force it.
  • You don’t have to compare your light to anyone else’s.

The people who really shine aren’t the ones trying to be flawless. They’re the ones who have let go of performing and have embraced becoming.

The closer you get to Jesus, the more His light spills out of you.

This understanding produces a new kind of confidence and identity. One that comes from God.

It’s one that says:

  • I’m capable because God makes me capable.
  • I’m loved because God loves me.
  • I’m growing in wisdom because God teaches me.
  • So on and so forth.

This isn’t about checking off religious boxes. It’s about falling in love with Jesus so deeply that you follow Him from love, not fear.

It’s all about proximity to Him.

Let’s Be Honest

Maybe you’re reading this and faith has felt complicated.

Maybe you’ve been hurt by people who claimed to represent Jesus.
Maybe you’ve struggled with feeling like an outsider in the church.
Maybe you’re still figuring out if you even want a relationship with God.

If that’s you, I just want to say: I see you. And I get it.

Jesus isn’t afraid of your questions, your doubts, or your past. He isn’t waiting for you to clean yourself up before He accepts you. He’s simply inviting you to know Him.

And the more you do? The more you’ll realize that everything you’ve been searching for; love, belonging, purpose, has been in Him all along.

Shine His Light

This journey of faith isn’t about following a script.

It’s about discovering who you were always meant to be.

The way I shine won’t look exactly like the way you shine. God created us uniquely, and that means His light shows up differently in each of us. The important thing isn’t how we shine, it’s that we stay connected to the Source.

So if you feel like you don’t have much light right now, don’t panic. The closer you get to Jesus, the more He changes you. And before you even realize it, you’ll be glowing with something far greater than yourself.

Let Him do the work. Stay close. Keep seeking.

✨ You are the light because you know the Light (Jesus). ✨

Ps. We have resources to help you grow in your relationship with God.
