I want to share something sacred that happened to me that was deeply personal and full of mystery.
It happened late one night. As I was settling into bed, I prayed like I normally do, simply asking to encounter God if He was willing. I wasn’t looking for a big sign. I just wanted to feel close to Him.
Then something in the atmosphere shifted.
A beautiful light began to fill my room. It shimmered and danced like a million tiny mirrors reflecting from every angle. It reminded me of the edges of a diamond or emerald, scattering light into every color imaginable. This was not ordinary light. It felt alive, like it was surrounding me on every side.
I felt completely enclosed in what I can only describe as majesty.
There was no fear. Only peace. Only love. I knew in the deepest part of me that I was not alone.
I was safe in the presence of something far greater than myself, my Heavenly Father.
A Glimpse of the Throne
I’m not the only person who has seen this unique light. Here are two scriptures that describe this rainbow gemtone light:
“A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne…”
— Revelation 4:2–3
“Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him… This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.”
— Ezekiel 1:26–28
Both passages describe a rainbow not just as a sign in the sky, but as a radiant circle of color surrounding God’s throne.
This is a living rainbow that wraps around, embraces and surrounds the Holy throne of God.

A Gemstone of Grace
The meaning of this light is multifaceted.
In essence, before going deeper, the emerald and rainbow light represent the fullness of God’s glory and His grace.
In the Bible, specifically in the Old Testament:
- The rainbow appeared after a great flood that God sent to destroy the earth due to great evil. It appeared as a symbol of His mercy. It was a promise of peace in the midst of judgment. When God sees the rainbow, it averts His wrath away from us and instead gives us His grace and mercy.
- The High Priest, a spiritual mediator for God’s people, wore a breastplate covered in gemstones, including an emerald. These represented God’s people and also His authority, government, compassion, and leadership. Wearing this breastplate, the High Priest would represent God’s people before God.
Now, in the New Testament, Jesus is our High Priest. He is also our Ark, rescuing us from the flood of judgment. His mercy is the rainbow. His leadership is the gemstones.
Now… there’s more.
If you’re born again, you’re in Jesus, and He is in you. This is a mystical union.
This gemstone rainbow represents who God is and proceeds from Him, but it also represents His people.
Each of us, whether we know it yet or not, carries the potential to reflect something heavenly. Not to be God, but to mirror His light uniquely.
Just like each cut of a gemstone catches light differently, every person carries a part of that reflection when they are in right relationship with Him.
An ancient Christian writer, Peter, described it like this:
“As you come to Him, a Living Stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 2:4-5)
It’s a metaphorical way; each person, when connected to God, becomes part of something much bigger than themselves. Something sacred and alive. Where:
- Jesus is our High Priest, and we are all priests under Him.
- Jesus is the Living Stone, and each one of us is a unique living stone, chosen by the Father.
This living stones metaphor is a beautiful and mystical picture of the reality that’s only found and lived in Jesus.

Step Into the Light
Maybe you’ve felt too different, too broken, or too far gone. Maybe you’ve never quite fit the mold or you’ve carried doubts about religion or spirituality for a long time.
That’s okay.
The presence I experienced wasn’t about rules or pressure. It was about being known. It was about being surrounded by a light that simply invited me to rest and receive.
If there’s one thing I’d want you to take from this, it’s this:
You are not an accident. You are not invisible. You were created to shine.
This Light is available to you, and it’s not found through striving. It’s found through Jesus:
- Jesus is God. He died for your sin (which separates you from God), was resurrected from the dead, and now reigns as King of the universe.
- Because of His sacrifice, when you place your trust in Him to forgive you, you’ll be supernaturally born again and brought into relationship with God.
- In this relationship, you’ll experience this mystical union I’ve been talking about and discover who Jesus is and who you truly are in Him.
And I want to remind you of this beautiful truth: In Jesus, you reflect His glory.
Not as a carbon copy of someone else.
Instead, He designs you in Him to uniquely shine His Light as you know Him personally.
This light is needed in the world.
It’s not about striving. It’s about surrendering. It’s about letting the warmth of His presence surround you like that gemstone light. This comes through embracing the truth about who God is and who you are in Him.
Let God define you in His presence. Let every other identity fall to the wayside.
His identity lasts forever. Our own doesn’t.
I encourage you to:
- Embrace your unique journey with Jesus.
- Welcome the light of God’s presence into your life to shine away the darkness.
- Remember that if you are born again, you’re wrapped in the covenant of mercy, like that rainbow around the throne.
Also, you don’t have to have it all figured out. Just start where you are, listen for His voice, and search His scriptures.
You are seen. You are called.
And like that radiant throne-room rainbow, you’re created to shine with the light of His love.
If your heart is stirred by this encounter and you feel a longing to understand how God is uniquely revealing Himself to you, we have resources to help you, and in-person and digital gatherings as well.
